Our Director of Religious Education

Picture
Jan Price has been Northwest's Director of Religious Education for Children and Older Youth for 20 years.

In 1980, Jan met her husband, Jerry, who was brought up in the Jewish faith.  They were married in 1981 at the Birmingham Unitarian Church.  They then moved to North Carolina, and lived there for three years.  When their son Josh was born, they returned to Michigan.
Jan was raised in the Roman Catholic faith, but had not attended an organized church in many years.  In 1986, Jan and Jerry came to Northwest U.U. Church, and made it their home.

Jan participated in the Youth Programs Committee prior to becoming Director of Religious Education in 1994.  She was Director from 1994-97, and again from 2001 to the present. Jan participates in district training and receives continuing education credits in subjects relating to children, such as autism spectrum disorders.  She takes pride in the fact that Northwest is very welcoming to all children including those with special needs.

Jan graduated from Wayne State University with a BA in sociology in 1975.  She worked as a foster care caseworker at Children's Aid Society in Detroit.  In North Carolina, she worked with developmentally challenged children.  She then worked at Carthage Department of Social Services as a protective services worker in rural poverty stricken areas. Upon returning to Michigan and starting a family, Jan decided to be a full-time mother.

She and Jerry now live in Ferndale, and have three grown sons - Josh, Nathaniel and Seth.  Jan's life and greatest joy has been centered on raising her children and contributing to the education of our children at Northwest.
