OUR MISSION

The Social Responsibility Committee’s mission is to respond to community needs and to address social justice issues which reflect the values of members of Northwest UU Church. The Committee is called upon to participate with the UU Service Committee, the Department of Faith in Action of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) with its United Nations & Washington D.C. offices, and the Heartland District.

RESPONDING TO COMMUNITY NEEDS

St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen - NWUU volunteers (adults and children) buy food, bake brownies, prepare and serve hot lunches and sack lunches for about 200 low income people four times a year at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen Church in Detroit .

Adopt-A-Size - Each December, NWUU families buy clothes to meet the needs of 12-15 needy Southfield children.

Thanksgiving Baskets - A Sunday morning service in November is dedicated to packing donated canned goods and produce into Thanksgiving baskets for up to 10 struggling Southfield families. Children enjoy decorating the baskets and being part of this community service.

ADDRESSING SOCIAL JUSTICE ISSUES

Sunday Morning Discussions - The Committee learns how church members feel about issues and promotes education and action on social justice issues. The Committee regularly organizes Sunday morning issue discussions, reviews issues promoted by the UUA Study/Action Committee and hosts information tables.

Social Justice Issues – The following issues have been subjects for discussion and action over the years: war and peace; environment; gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender issues; civil liberties; campaign finance and election reform; prison reform; poverty; universal health care; education reform, long term care, media issues; abortion/reproductive rights; racial justice; education reform; globalization; war on drugs, death penalty; etc.

DENOMINATIONAL AFFAIRS

The Committee provides information about the UU denomination, including the activities of the UUA, the Heartland District and affiliated organizations such as the UU Service Committee.
