Adult Education

The Café at NWUU: What is it? An  informal gathering of people interested in talking about their thoughts and concepts of the world. Led by a moderator, the discussion follows a method of questioning inspired by the philosopher, Socrates. We usually assume that everyone else understands a concept in the same way we do.  However, in The Café you will be surprised to discover the broad range of perspectives that others have to share about the same concept. We will run The Café Friday evenings at 7:30PM.

Adult Religious Education beginning in January:

Pocket Sundays: The second Sunday each month at 12:15 we will gather for a discussion of the Unitarian Universalist Pocket Guide facilitated by Rev. Kimi Riegel. We will take a chapter a month. The topics include our faith, our history, our religious education and more. We will start January 8th with Chapter one; our faith. Books will be available on Sundays. Let Kimi know if you need childcare.

On-going Deeper Enneagram: Beginning Tuesday Jan 10 we will take a deeper look into the Enneagram. For those who have studied it in the past this class will meet on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday nights of each month. Having a basic knowledge of the structure of the Enneagram we will look more closely at how it influences our relationships and our lives. Please join us from 7-9 on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays.

Fundamentalism and UU: Beginning Feb 7 for the 1st & 3rd Tuesdays we will discuss fundamentalism and its world view. We will use a number of texts. Save the dates Feb. 7, 21 and March 7, 21.

Sex Is Coming: Revs. Alex and Kimi Riegel were trained in October to teach the Adult sexuality curriculum. It’s the adult component to the five part Our Whole Lives curriculum. Beginning in mid-April we will teach a class offered to both churches. Dates will be announced soon!

 Book Discussion Group

The monthly book discussion group, open to all, continues to meet in members' homes on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Call the church office to find out where the group is meeting.

Sunday Morning Discussion Groups

For many years the fourth part of our Sunday service has been discussion group activity. This is a time for members of the congregation to share and to consider their diverse viewpoints. Over time there have been many titles and topics for these groups. Currently, these are the regular discussion groups:

Sermon Discussion – Meets almost every Sunday to reflect on the issues raised in that day’s homily.
Social Responsibility
– Meets the first Sunday of each month to discuss topics of social relevance. This is coordinated by the Social Responsibility Committee.
Conservative/Liberal Forum
– Meets the second Sunday of each month. In the context of our liberal religion there is a diversity of social and political views. These viewpoints range from some popularly classified as “Conservative,” others “Liberal.” This group discusses this variety of understandings as expressed by members of our congregation.
Parenting
– This group gathers every third Sunday to share experiences and support in the on-going adventure of parenting. There is frequently a lead topic, as well as time for individual concerns.
Open Forum
– This group meets the final Sunday of each month to consider topics from our every day lives in the context of UU values.

All members and visitors are encouraged to participate in this final part of our Sunday service. Additional or special discussion groups are always encouraged. If you have suggestions, call the church office (248-354-4488) and ask about the Adult Programs Committee.

Please note: Most Adult Program activities are free of charge. There may be a nominal fee for refreshments. See the Northwest newsletter, “Growing Times,” for more information.
